Smoked Duck Carbonara (As Featured in Express UK)

Thank you Express UK for featuring my smoked duck carbonara recipe. When I first heard of smoked duck carbonara, I was very, very skeptical. Smoked duck as a replacement for bacon? No way, José! And I’m not even Italian! Fyi, bacon is not even the cured meat of choice for proper carbonara, ya? Italians traditionally…

Dim Sum Style Shrimp Toast

Ah, shrimp toast brings back fond memories of my childhood. Growing up, I spent a lot of time poring over mum’s mountains of recipe books. One day, in a thick hardcover tome that was filled with mouthwatering illustrations – either Puriselera or Malaysian Cooking something – I came across this Hong Kong dim sum specialty…

Cili Boh

Cili Boh

Cili boh, chilli paste, cili giling. When I first dipped my toes into the cooking world, I came across these terms in Malaysian recipes and was thoroughly confused. Alamak, so many types of cili. What’s the difference? Actually, was there even a difference? If you are like me, be confused no more. The terms essentially…

Sweet and Sour Chicken, the Adult Version

If there’s a side dish that’s universally beloved, it must be sweet and sour chicken. Who could resist crispy battered juicy chicken pieces tossed in an appetizing sweet sticky sauce with crunchy vegetables? As my husband, nieces and nephews would say, “One plate of rice is not enough!” Chances are, you have probably eaten sweet…

Penang’s Best Roti Canai

Or how I found the Javier Bardem of Roti Canai … read on 🙂 One sunny morning, hubs and I wanted to eat somewhere new, so we ended up at a food court near the Sg Tiram Shell station. “I ordered roti canai with mutton curry,” hubby announced. I nodded disinterestedly. To be honest I…

Quick Thai Stir-fried Brinjal with Minced Meat

The minute I ate Makheua Yao Pad Tao Jiao (Thai stir-fried brinjal with minced meat), I knew I wanted to recreate it at home. But first, I had to identify the secret ingredient that was the key to its unforgettable taste. I first ate it at The Fisher by Krua Thai, a new-ish Thai restaurant…

Healthier, Easier & Super Sedap Ayam Geprek

This ayam geprek is officially our favourite chicken dish now. What is ayam geprek? According to the internets, ayam geprek is an Indonesian crispy battered fried chicken topped with hot and spicy sambal. Geprek is Javanese for “crushed” or “smashed”, thus ayam geprek means “crushed chicken”. It is quite similar to traditional East Javanese ayam…

Mee Tikus Viral in Medan Kidd, Ipoh

When somebody sent me a Tiktok video of a “mee tikus viral” in Ipoh, I was skeptical. They say Ipoh produces phenomenally picky eaters. I can’t speak for others, but my family is definitely proof of that. Many so-called viral shops and restaurants have failed my mum’s super-high standards. I finally had some peace and…

Pad Kra Pow

Pad kra pow is probably my favourite Thai dish of all time. Not too hard, and one-pot meal at that, I make this quite often. But this update on the recipe is probably the best, the tastiest, most flavourful, most sedap version I’ve done so far. The recipe is inspired by my relative who is…

Hyderabad Mutton Masala

Full disclosure. I did not create this recipe for Hyderabad mutton masala, but extracted it out of another recipe for biryani. From young, my friends used to tease me for having an “Indian stomach” because of my penchant for curries, masalas, etc. In fact, I used to joke that I knew what chicken varuval was,…
