Caramelised Onion & Anchovy Relish … The Umami Jar I Always Keep in My Fridge

Every now and then, I open the fridge to find a few onions that have been sitting there a little too long. Not enough to spoil, but enough that they really should be used – that’s when I make this caramelised onion and anchovy relish. Four onions may sound excessive, but they cook down into…

Easy Sardine Puffs with Frozen Roti – the best thing to come out of MCO

I learned to make sardine puffs using frozen roti during MCO. You know, when every other human was inventing all sorts of wild things with Kawan Food roti …. (their share price must have gone through the roof. Should have bought their stock, aiya!) To my surprise, I discovered that frozen roti is a really…

Airfryer Scoop Cookie with a Pistachio Centre

If you’ve been scrolling food videos lately, chances are you’ve seen the scoop cookie. It started popping up all over my feed about two weeks ago, and naturally my curiosity was piqued. Thick bakery-style cookies, scooped into a mound instead of flattened, sometimes stuffed with chocolate or spreads. The promise is always the same: a…

No-Bake 3-Ingredient Viral Cheesecake

Some of my favourite kitchen experiments happen when I’m trying to clear leftovers from the fridge, like this no-bake Greek yogurt “cheesecake”. You’ve probably seen the viral two-ingredient cheesecake trend by now. This version uses just one extra ingredient, and honestly, it tastes even better. I’m speaking as someone who has tried the viral cheesecake…

Chicken Kimchi Pajeon

Like many people, I discovered pajeon, the Korean savoury pancake, through K-dramas. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were stuck in our apartment for weeks. Nowhere to go. Nothing much to do. From Crash Landing on You, I watched another .. and another…and another. Somewhere in between all the plot twists and…

Hummus Without Tahini

I love me some hummus but tahini is SO expensive in Malaysia – then one day I thought, can I make hummus WITHOUT tahini? Turns out you can! The secret lies in a pantry staple familiar to every Asian kitchen: sesame oil. While it may not replicate the exact taste of tahini, it’s a great…

Chocolate Banana Bread (No Weighing Scales Required)

Chocolate Banana Bread (No Weighing Scales Required)

I’m not much of a baker and measuring ingredients with precision ain’t my style. However, I will make an exception for this chocolate banana bread. I have made it over and over again – partly because it’s just that good, partly because it’s so forgiving. I’ve made it using weighing scales. I’ve made it using…

The Ultimate Fudgy Brownies

When it comes to brownies, I’m strictly #teamfudgy. After eating my way through a mountain of (mostly) cakey ones, I decided to try making my own. Many experiments later, I’ve come up with a formula that works! Here’s everything you need to know to achieve that perfect, gooey texture. The Key to Fudgy Brownies Get…

Keto Lemon Loaf

Keto Lemon Loaf

Loving my keto lemon loaf so much! … keto? How did I, inveterate lover of carbs, end up on the keto bandwagon? This was partly inspired by a chat I had with a dietician when my parents came down in KL for medical appointments. She posited that adopting a low-carb diet can reverse diabetes. Or…

Dutch Baby Pancakes

I keep making ’em, these things called Dutch baby pancakes. What exactly are they, you ask? And do they have anything to do with the Dutch or the Netherlands? I posed this question to my cousins who live in the Netherlands and they said no. To be more accurate, the Dutch have Dutch MINI pancakes…

My Brave Banana Cake

How can a banana cake recipe be brave? Well, the baker has to be brave … when she declares that you don’t need weighing scales to make it. … say what? Yup, you heard right. You can make this moist, tender, amazingly delicious banana cake using just measuring cups and eyeballing. Now, I’ve been told…

Pengat Pisang

Pengat Pisang

Pengat pisang is one of the simplest and most comforting Malaysian desserts you can make — a warm pot of bananas simmered gently in coconut milk, sugar, and pandan. I fell in love with it back in my Universiti Sains Malaysia undergraduate days, when Desa Cahaya’s canteen would rotate different types of pengat every day:…

Woo Thau Koh (Yam Cake) 芋头糕

A savoury cake that Malaysians eat as a traditional snack, yam cake or woo thau koh is the ultimate flavour bomb. We’re right smack into the 2nd phase of the COVID19 MCO as I write this. Last week, I was getting bored of the usual Chinese dishes and pastas, and started fantasizing about some kopitiam…
