Dried Shrimp Fried Beehoon

Dried Shrimp Fried Beehoon

How do you prevent fried beehoon from sticking to the wok? Ask any cook and that is probably their no 1 pet peeve when cooking fried beehoon, a simple and most delicious dish. Washing the wok after frying, however, is a pain of epic proportions. I usually soak the wok in hot water to “lift”…

Being Fiscally Prudent

So recently, something exciting happened: I did my very first podcast!! Stev Yong, former IT manager turned financial consultant, invited me to speak about www.cookwithipohbunny.com on My Personal Finances, the award-winning financial education education platform he founded. What has personal finances got to do with a food website? Personally, the MCO forced me to confront…

Nyonya Otak-otak

I’ve known Danny Boh, the contributor of this otak-otak recipe, for a long time. Nearly 20 years in fact. We go way back to the days when I joined Dell Penang as a fresh graduate and Danny was a sales manager in another department. Sure we said hello once in a while. But life…

Kai Si Hor Fun (Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun)

Every Ipohite has their favourite kai si hor fun stall. Mine is Canning Garden’s Little Katong, a relative newcomer compared to the old stalwarts in other parts of Ipoh. I prefer this version because the soup is rich and flavourful without being overly sweet. For the uninitiated, kai si hor fun stands for shredded chicken…

Luxurious Chicken Porridge

Luxurious Chicken Porridge

What could be so luxurious about chicken porridge? If you make them the way my Aunt Wong Kim Yeng does, then it is SUPER luxurious. In fact, better than any dim sum restaurant out there! I found out about her special porridge way back in 2006. I had just moved to Kuala Lumpur permanently to…

Easy Breakfast Casserole

Do you find yourself stuck with leftover bread that you don’t know what to do with? I know I do, especially the ends of bread loaves, which are hard and not so nice to eat. Inspired by Japanese chef Masa, I developed a simple recipe that uses leftover bread to create a delicious breakfast casserole…

Bridging People Through Food Art

I was doing my usual lurking at the lively Global Malaysian Makan Minum Network FB Group when a photo stopped me short in my e-tracks. “What a gorgeous looking bowl of hokkien mee!” I thought. My mouth watered at the sight of succulent prawns swimming in an appetizing bowl of noodle soup topped with a…

Sang Har Meen

Sang har meen brings back wonderful memories. Growing up, I would visit my relatives in Bukit Bintang whenever I came to Kuala Lumpur. The neighbourhood was a hotspot for sang har meen, a popular Chinese restaurant dish featuring giant river prawns atop a bed of crispy noodles swimming in a rich briny sauce. Yum!! The…

Artisan Handmade Bread: Surviving MCO

When Covid19 hit, Sam Lau of Artisan Handmade Bread was forced to return to his baking roots – but not all’s gloom and doom. “Come come, Alex, you must try some sourdough from this young man.” My ears pricked up. Sourdough was starting to trend in Kuala Lumpur, but I had not heard the word…

Before I dive into the mechanics of making braised turmeric chicken, allow me to digress a little. When I started sharing recipes on social media, I didn’t expect it to become such a rich learning resource, thanks to friends who comment. The recipe for this braised turmeric chicken is inspired by a FB post about…

Claypot Chicken Rice

Growing up in Ipoh, I got to know claypot chicken rice at a very young age. I still remember where I ate it: a roadside stall in Hugh Low Street. The uncle and aunty would monitor multiple claypots on stoves like hawks, holding fans to control the flame and lifting the lids occasionally to check…

Braised Yee Mee

Braised yee mee is one of my favourite 15-minute comfort meals — saucy, slurpy, and perfect for using up whatever vegetables and protein you already have at home. The first dish my mum ever taught me, it’s her go-to solution for days when she can’t decide what to cook. Why? Because it’s easy, tasty, and…

Who’s Ipohbunny, lah?

Welcome!

I’m Alexandra Wong, aka Ipohbunny. Yes, I was born in Ipoh, a city in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Oh and like many Ipohites, I’m a hardcore foodie!

As a food and travel journalist and author, and daughter of two amazing home cooks (my mum makes better food than most restaurants!) I am passionate about recreating restaurant-style dishes at home.

From Indian to Japanese, Laotian to Italian, I’m game to try any cuisine from any country – as long as there’s a stove involved (yes, I even bake bread on it) and my well-loved airfryer is within reach!
