Keto Lemon Loaf

Loving my keto lemon loaf so much! … keto? How did I, inveterate lover of carbs, end up on the keto bandwagon? This was partly inspired by a chat I had with a dietician when my parents came down in KL for medical appointments. She posited that adopting a low-carb diet can reverse diabetes. Or…

Lemongrass Chicken Noodles

Lemongrass Chicken Noodles

There’s no shortage of Vietnamese lemongrass chicken recipes online – I’ve even attempted some of them – but I never knew how magnificent it could be until I tried the version at Ăn Viet. Winsomely tucked between split lemongrass sticks, the dish arrived beautifully presented. But it was when I bit into the meat that…

Dutch Baby Pancakes

I keep making ’em, these things called Dutch baby pancakes. What exactly are they, you ask? And do they have anything to do with the Dutch or the Netherlands? I posed this question to my cousins who live in the Netherlands and they said no. To be more accurate, the Dutch have Dutch MINI pancakes…

Thai Beef Noodles

The first ever noodle soup I made was not kai si hor fun, or prawn noodles, or curry noodles … but Thai beef noodle soup! Why? Thanks to Youtube queen Marion of www.marionskitchen.com, who made the process look so easy, I simply HAD to try making it. To my surprise, it wasn’t hard at all….

Creamy Chicken Casserole

Proof that this creamy chicken casserole is a winner? The first words out of my hubby’s mouth after his first bite were: “Make sure you write this recipe down!” Uh huh. That’s how good it was. To give credit where it’s due, I was inspired by Chicken Gloria, a recipe from popular Youtuber Natasha’s Kitchen….

Biang Biang Pasta

Traditionalists might wanna look away: this unapologetic hack on biang biang noodles might make you weep! I’ve long heard about biang biang noodles, a Xian classic dish comprising thick, hand-pulled noodles tossed in a dangerously spicy chilli oil sauce. I first tried it at Chocha Foodstore and was blown away by how flavourful, delicious and…

My Brave Banana Cake

How can a banana cake recipe be brave? Well, the baker has to be brave … when she declares that you don’t need weighing scales to make it. … say what? Yup, you heard right. You can make this moist, tender, amazingly delicious banana cake using just measuring cups and eyeballing. Now, I’ve been told…

Pengat Pisang

Pengat Pisang

Pengat pisang is one of the simplest and most comforting Malaysian desserts you can make — a warm pot of bananas simmered gently in coconut milk, sugar, and pandan. I fell in love with it back in my Universiti Sains Malaysia undergraduate days, when Desa Cahaya’s canteen would rotate different types of pengat every day:…

ABC Soup

When I feel under the weather, I automatically think of ABC soup, the comfort food of many a Malaysian Chinese household. More so during this COVID pandemic period, when we should keep our immune systems as strong as possible. While some turn to supplements, I am focusing on using nutritious, immune system boosting ingredients that…

Chicken Nanban

Chicken nanban: this dish was born of an accident really. My hubby was experimenting with a newfangled method to make soft-boiled eggs and ended up making hard-boiled eggs instead. What to do? Why, make chicken nanban of course! Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it. In Malaysia where I live, chicken dishes in…

Kerabu Beehoon

Sometimes called noodle salad, kerabu beehoon is a Nyonya dish of rice vermicelli and lots of fresh herbs and aromatics, tossed with a spicy sauce and zesty lime juice. Colourful and refreshing, it’s a delicious representation of Malaysia’s diverse culinary culture. While I’ve eaten this many times before, it took a weekend getaway at EQ…

Easy Lamb Pilaf

Easy Lamb Pilaf

I never, ever thought I would cook lamb, let alone lamb pilaf. For a long time, I was under the impression that lamb/mutton needs hours of pre-boiling to soften the tough meat, until recently. Using my Le Creuset Dutch Oven and Made-in-Malaysia mixed spice brand Opah Herbs, I attempted to cook lamb shoulder. To my…

Roast Peppers Potato Salad

ANOTHER vegetable salad recipe?? Some of my old friends will think I’ve undergone a lobotomy or something. After all, I used to hate vegetables so much that when my mum wasn’t looking, I’d dump the greens on my plate into the drain! But this potato salad recipe is so good that I just HAD to…
